The 2024/25 season opens with Ode, a program to celebrate long-time company artist Desiree Bortolussi and mark her retirement after thirteen illustrious years with Ballet Kelowna. For her final performances, Ms. Bortolussi will be featured in Simone Orlando’s intricate Cuatro Estaciones, Guillaume Côté’s riveting Bolero, and the Canadian premiere of Trey McIntyre’s The Reassuring Effects (of Form and Poetry) in what promises to be a triumphant and emotional evening of dance.
Bolero
Guillaume Côté is a celebrated Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate with The National Ballet of Canada and has received numerous awards for his thrilling choreography. Bolero, set to Maurice Ravel’s famous composition of the same name, is a perennial favourite in Ballet Kelowna’s repertoire and celebrates the strength and resilience of women through a formidable show of athletic prowess. Slow, hypnotic movements build to explosive lifts as four men dance around a central female figure.
The Reassuring Effects (of Form and Poetry)
Trailblazing American choreographer Trey McIntyre makes his debut choreographic appearance with Ballet Kelowna in The Reassuring Effects (of Form and Poetry), a work first created for The Washington Ballet. McIntyre uses Antonín Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings in E Major as a springboard to showcase his fresh and imaginative style while eight dancers embody his virtuosic, nuanced movement, creating a playful and electrifying atmosphere. “It’s a dizzying blend of classical and colloquial movement that moves with the speed and clarity of light” (Miami Herald).
